Making the appointment when you don't want to make the appointment.
A practical script for booking a primary care, therapist, or psychiatrist appointment — including what to say if you've put it off for months.
The first call is the hardest part
Most medical offices are not interrogating you when you call. The receptionist is checking insurance, finding a slot, and writing down a sentence about why you're coming in. You don't have to summarize your whole situation. You don't have to know what's wrong.
If calls are unusable for you, almost every system now has online booking, patient portal messaging, or a request-an-appointment form. Use whichever channel costs you the least and book the actual appointment from there.
Scripts
PRIMARY CARE. 'Hi, I'd like to make an appointment. I've been having [symptoms — fatigue / pain / anxiety / focus issues] for [time] and I'd like to get checked out. I've been a patient before / I'm a new patient.'
THERAPIST (existing referral). 'Hi, I got your name from [referrer / insurance directory / school counselor]. I'd like to set up an initial appointment. I'm dealing with [general area — depression / anxiety / ADHD / trauma]. Are you taking new patients?'
THERAPIST (cold). 'Hi, I'm looking for a therapist. I'm dealing with [general area]. Are you taking new patients, and do you take [insurance]? If not, what's your sliding scale?'
PSYCHIATRIST. 'Hi, my [primary care doctor / therapist] suggested I see a psychiatrist. I'm currently [on / not on] medication and I'm having [issues]. I'd like to schedule an evaluation.'
FIRST-TIME PSYCH HOSPITAL OR CRISIS LINE. 'I'm not safe right now / I'm having thoughts of hurting myself / I haven't been able to stop [behavior]. I need help figuring out what to do next.' (988 in the US, or your local emergency number, are designed for this exact call.)
If you've been putting it off for months
A lot of people get stuck in the 'I'll call when I have it together' loop. The doctors of the world are not waiting for the polished version. They expect you to show up tired, late, with nothing rehearsed. Whatever month it is now, pick a day this week, put it on a calendar, and call from a quiet room. If you don't get through, leave a message. They call back.
what people get wrong
wrongI'll call when it gets bad enough.
closerThere is no objective threshold. If it is interfering with your life, that is enough. Earlier care is almost always easier care.
wrongIf it's just mental health, I don't need to bother a doctor.
closerPrimary care doctors increasingly screen for and treat depression and anxiety. Therapists and psychiatrists exist for the more specific work. None of these are a 'bother.'
what actually helps
- Making the appointment the moment the impulse arrives, before the talking-yourself-out kicks in.
- Using insurance or school websites to filter to providers who actually take your plan and have openings.
- Asking for the soonest appointment, even if it's far out — you can always cancel if you find sooner.
- Bringing a written list to the appointment so you don't go blank in the room.
